Back turning machines and relief grinding machines are machine tools used for machining workpieces where access must be from the rear side. Back turning machines are specialized lathes that allow machining the back side of workpieces that have already been machined on the front side. Back-grinding machines are similar, but use grinding wheels instead of turning tools to remove material from the back of a workpiece that has already been machined. These machines are used in a variety of industries, including automotive, aerospace and medical. A typical application example is the machining of turbine blades, where the shape of the blade is machined from the front and the cutting edges must be ground from the back.
